life with the glorious downtrodden

November 14, 2008 at 1:24 pm (Christian Life, social justice)

today, i went to ROOTS (rising out of the shadows) for the first time.  a center that houses 18-25 year old homeless youth night-by-night.  i was encouraged by the volunteer coordinator, her joy and her quiet passion.  they have about 25 people a night, and offer showers, food, mattresses, blankets, clothing, the whole works.  i am hoping to start doing some breakfast shifts on the weekends.  they have a few weekly food donors, and volunteers are given free reign of the kitchen.  i’m excited to see what the group might be able to cook up!

yesterday, i spent the morning working with the muscular dystrophy association’s fundraising event.  i met alot of important people and helped explain what muscular dystrophy is and how it affects those who have it.  then, last night i went to an organization called HIP (Hunger Intervention Program) that builds between 120-200 meals for every single day of the week.  i will be helping lead the wednesday volunteer groups to prepare the food for the center on 3rd & yesler.  i am hoping to really build a relationship here and form opportunities for Epic Life to be involved in this work.

casey and i went down to union gospel mission on monday night to learn more about all of the different shelters and programs they offer in seattle.  now, the trouble will be in deciding where we should serve!  so much need- but we were blessed to be there, were able to meet a guy who had gone through the men’s transitional program and was just exuberant.  they have a ’search and rescue’ van that drives around two nights a week, (and when it’s 32 degrees or colder) and hands out blankets, food, supplies, and other random items to people on the streets.  that’s going to be a great epic life experience.

this saturday, a few of us are going down to the ‘jubilee center’, which houses homeless women- we’re going to go plant flowers outside their new shelter! hopefully it will stay warm and sunny here (today was a beautiful seattle day).

please pray for what God is doing here and the connections He is allowing me to make.
pray that the work would be blessed and that only HE would be honored in all of it.

He deserves everything, and He is a lover of justice.

I will do everything in my power to honor that.

Shelli, You have the spiritual gift of encouragement….thought you should know. It has nothing to do with this post, but just felt the need to point that out to you. You have the humility to flat out tell others what they’re good at to encourage them- God wants to use this gift in you. Use it for His glory!!!
